Biodynamic, organic farming

At Ursa Farm, we grow organic food using biodynamic principles, which involves nurturing the whole farm as a living organism. This results in the most nutrient dense and healing food products. When you buy from Ursa Farm you are not only supporting our small family farm, but also many small farms and local businesses around us that we support.

What is biodynamic farming?

Biodynamics incorporates the spiritual-science of Anthroposophy into agriculture. Anthropos, Greek for Human Being, and Sophia, Greek for Wisdom, is ancient knowledge which has been re-enlivened for our times through the philosophies of Dr. Rudolf Steiner.

We aim to co-create harmony and balance on earth and with the cosmos through our living and farming practices. Biodynamic farming views the farm, from the soil to the plants to the animals and human beings, as a holistic living organism. Cosmic rhythms of the solar system, play a key role in how we steward the land. Care is taken to nurture the whole, so that each element can thrive in balance together.

Local, organic farm products

When you buy from Ursa Farm you are supporting the many small farms and local businesses around us. While biodynamic farming aims to not have many inputs, but rather sustain the farm from within, we are still working towards that goal. Most of the inputs that we do need, we buy from local small farms and businesses. We get all of our organic grains (we only use organic feed) from Barnyard Organics in PEI, shipped and sold via UA Honey (another local small farm business). Our chickens and turkeys are processed at Holdanca Farm. Our beef cows and sheep are fed hay from local small farms, retired farmers, and also organic produce from Wysmykal Farm. Government inspected butchering happens at the local family-run abattoir, Dickies Meats. We buy local, therefore when you buy our products you can know that not only are you helping our small family farm, but you are also supporting many other local farms and businesses as well.

We believe that a network of small farm producers and local consumers helping each other makes for a far more resilient and healthy community. We hope you enjoy our products—please visit our Farm Store to see what we currently have available.
